From rock to wood

How many geologists design award-winning furniture? To our knowledge there is only one - Ian Saville.
I hung up my rock hammer in the early 90's when I trained as a furniture maker. I now design and make a range of striking, functional furniture combining simplicity and style. The Creator Bass music stand (featured below) was shortlisted for the Wesley-Barrell Craft Awards 2006.
Not surprisingly I draw my inspiration from nature and, as with all the designs in my music furniture range, performance. My duet music table won a prestigious Guildmark from the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, London.
Sometimes an idea is instantaneous. With the Creator stands the design was more evolutionary. Having spent many years in the company of musicians I wanted to create something that reflected the beauty of their craft as well as being an eye-catching design which was more contemporary.
News of the Creator stands has reached as far as Japan and the USA. We've become experts at packaging too, shipping products abroad presented a new learning curve.
In contrast to my broadening reputation, I prefer the tranquility of my Peak District home. I use timbers from local sources wherever possible and carefully selected materials. The end result is a family of furniture that is designed to be used yet which through its beauty seeks to be admired.
