Thoroughly modern Malvern

Jackie & Lloyd Choi, 11 Oct 2007

'Now in it's fourth year, Eureka is an initiative that links designers with retailers to get innovative products to a wider audience on the high street and we were very excited when Wesley-Barrell chose us to work with them for the Eureka project this year. We were aware that Wesley-Barrell is a well-established classic sofa company and were fascinated to see that the brief was to create a contemporary curvy modular sofa for open plan living whilst considering practicality and Wesley-Barrell's market and customer lifestyle.

There were highly experienced people at Wesley-Barrell who made the impossible possible and we learnt a great deal from them. Through open discussions and sharing of ideas we were able to reproduce the sinuous curved form that was at the heart of our design. It was then amazing to see craftspeople at Wesley-Barrell employing traditional skills to create the curved lines of the Malvern sofa by using pieces of seasoned wood to form a segmented framework almost resembling the hull of a ship.

malvern_bigTo be asked to come up with a sofa that had never been seen before was like a dream of being in a candy shop where we could have anything we wanted! The commission has allowed us to approach the design process in a different way which we believe has all been possible because Wesley-Barrell is a company with a pioneering spirit.'
