Made in Britain

For over 120 years Wesley-Barrell have been dedicated to the continuation of traditional upholstery skills and methods, working from their UK workshops to hand build a collection of sofas and armchairs which epitomise the very best of British furniture making.

Great, British and Green

Wesley-Barrell firmly believe that people increasingly value high-quality products of British provenance that are hand-made with intergrity and built to look great and last for longer.

Greater awareness of sustainability, durability and responsible consumerism has allowed companies such as Wesley-Barrell to come into their own.  We pride ourselves on hand-making our own furniture from start to finish in our own Oxfordshire workshops making high-quality products here in Britain whilst providing skills and employment in the process.

Our eco-credentials

Manufacturing in a sustainable and socially responsible way is fundamental to the Wesley-Barrell ethos.  We don't just claim to be 'green' or 'eco-friendly', here are some of the practical things we do every day.

Craftsperson plaining wood

FSC accredited timber

  • Wesley-Barrell's timber frames are cut in our saw workshops and hand-crafted by experienced carpenters from a combination of soft and hard woods including beech and pine from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) managed forests.  Frames are guaranteed for 25 years so longevity is built into our sofas from the start

British contract standards

  • Our furniture meets British contract standard BS4875.  This exceeds normal domestic requirements so a Wesley-Barrell sofa will endure a high level of wear and tear yet offer great comfort and good looks for years... not just for the first few months of life in your home.

Natural materials

  • To guarantee provenance Wesley-Barrell source all their own padding materials and where possible natural padding materials and fillings are used.  Padding materials include hogs hair that is coated with fire retardent latex (a natural rubber) and cotton felt (a by-product of the cotton industry).  Recycled jumpers and cardigans are ripped up and washed, pieces are then attached to a backing by a needling machine to form a woven wool felt sheet used for padding.
  • Hessian made from Jute is used to cover seat and back springs.
  • Wesley-Barrell offer a range of cushion fillings including duck feathers or a polymer fibre made from recycled plastic bottles.

British natural wool

  • We constantly strive to widen our fabric selection and promote natural wool to cover furniture allowing you to choose an inherently flame retardant fabric with low ecological impact.

Re-use & renovate

  • The specialist production of our furniture within our own workshops means that Wesley-Barrell can offer a renovation and re-upholstery service.  Your existing sofa can be given a new lease of life by renvovation, avoiding a disposal trip to a landfill site thereby ensuring your initial investment really can last a lifetime.

  • Wood off-cuts are recycled for kindling and fabric ends are up-cycled to a local charity and schools.
  • Wesley-Barrell recycle all their cardboard, plastic packaging and office equipment such as mobile phones and printer cartridges reducing our land-fill since 2006 by 50%.

Saving energy

  • Working with the Carbon Trust Wesley-Barrell have implemented energy saving solutions such as a new energy efficient lighting system in the workshops which provides equivalent light using half the energy.

Celebrating our British heritage

Invariably journalists turn to Wesley-Barrell when they are compiling guides to British furniture makers and choosing upholstery for magazines such as Homes & Gardens (above and left) and Period Living (above right).

A great endorsement and acknowledgement that Wesley-Barrell is at the forefront of British furniture design and making.
